chertozeTourists are always surprised when the monumental buildings of Certosa di Pavia suddenly appear in front of them. No one expects to find this pearl of Renaissance architecture with well-preserved decorations of the famous Lombard painter Bergognone in the middle of nowhere, surrounded only by fields and small villages.

Gian Galeazzo Visconti, who built Milan Cathedral (Duomo), projected Certosa di Pavia as a family mausoleum (his sarcophagus is located inside the temple). One will also see the tomb of Ludovico Sforza from Milan’s Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie with the remains of the wife Beatrice D’Este.

Certosa is an acting monastery with all its rules and traditions. Tourists will see the monks and get to know about their life.
